Michael F. Ellis

Michael Ellis is an emerging artist currently living and working in New Haven, CT, USA.
Born in 1979 in Massachusetts,

he received his BFA in Painting and Art History from the University of Massachusetts in 2002, and his MFA in Art Theory and Practice from Northwestern University in 2004.
His art practice involves a steady investigation of painting’s rich history of materials and techniques alongside issues of contemporary theory and philosophy, most specifically those centered on the overlap of painting and photography.

He has exhibited at Anthony Greaney Gallery in Boston (2009) and participated in numerous group shows throughout New York City. While developing his own studio discipline, he has taught painting and drawing at fine art institutions including Harvard University’s Department of Visual and Environmental Studies and worked in established studios in Paris and New York.

The combined experiences of painting, research, teaching and assisting have occupied his time for the past decade and continue to inform his work today.

Artist Statement

The photograph is the illusion that goes by unnoticed and anonymous. This is my attraction to painting it. When I paint it, I transform it, allowing me to call attention to the fact that it is a physical illusion and not actual everyday reality. In the works for “Hello Anonymous” I looked for subjects in my life that have a connection to painting `s past and photography`s present. A clock and a traffic light intersection allow me to show the instantaneity of the photograph in the slowly labored from of oil painting. I enjoy this irony. By painting concentric squares consisting of a variety of paint handling I can call attention to this labored from of paint handling as well.
In the end a painting should be enjoyed by the way it is painted ad should inspire questions as to its nature because it is done well. Painting the photograph is a way for me to render a surface which is largely unseen.
